PEZINOK

 

Slovakia is a small country in the heart of Europe.Our neighbours are Czech republic in the northwest, Poland in the north, Ukraine in the east, Hungary in the south and Austria in the southwest. The capital city of Slovakia is Bratislava. Pezinok lies near Bratislava, exactly it is 18 km from it.Pezinok is situated on the foot of mountains Malé Karpaty. Pezinok is a winetown. There is a wine plant where wine is produced. A soft drink called "VINEA" is produced there,too. It is a drink with a taste of wine. Grapes are matured in September. It is a great occasion to organize a festival. Every other year vintage (wine festival) is in our town. In Slovakia it is called "VINOBRANIE" . The festival lasts 3 days (Friday, Saturday, Sunday). In the center of the town there are a lot of stalls with refreshment and with some products and craft. There are many merry-go-rounds in the town. There are a lot of  winecellars opened where is possible to taste the wine. It is the wonderful festival. Everybody has fun during these days. Many people drink much wine. There is a specific wine drink for winefestival it is burčiak.

 

And what about history of Pezinok? There are many historical buildings. Pezinok castle dominates them. It was built on circular ground plan around courtyard in 1785. It was protected by historical walls with 2 towers. The outside fortification included 2 embankments and 2 water ditches. When anyone wanted to enter the castle, he had to cross the 2 bridges. The castle was built from stone. Today´s design of the castle comes from the 19th century. Around the castle there is a park, too. It was changed from the castle garden to an English park by the count František Pálfy. In 1931 it became Pezinok town´s park. It covers the area of 6 hectares including a lake. It is a beautiful place for having a rest. Other historical buildings worth to mention are Pezinok´s churches. We have got 5 churches and 1 sinagogue. The oldest church is the Parish church.

 

And what about sport? Sports are very popular here. The most popular sport is basketball. We have been the champions of Slovakia. In Pezinok there are many good places for sporting. You can go to the swimming pool, you can play tennis, squash, volleyball.... For young people there is a small skatepark. It is not great, but it is better than nothing. 

 

 This town is one of the most beautiful towns of Slovakia,especially for us. You always find something interesting to do here.

History
The first settlement of this territory was in 4000-3000 B.C. In Pezinok there were discovered the remains of Celts settlement, too. The first written record about Pezinok is from 1208. In the second half of the 13th century the first wave of German vintners and craftsmen settled in Pezinok, at the beggining of the 16 th century there was the second wave. In 1647 King Ferdinand III. issued the charter granting Pezinok the statuts of free royal city. The reminder of Pezinok´s rich history for visitors are today in town centre: The Small Carpatian Museum, the Castle with park in the style of English garden, the City Hall in the Renaissance style, the parish Gotic Church from the 14th century with early renaissance pulpit, the Baroque Cappuchin Church with Closter, the baroque catholic church from the 17th century, the protestant Church from 1783 and historicaly valuable churches in Grinava and Cajla. There are 66 cultural sights in area.

Culture
Cultural life of Pezinok´s citizens and visitors from wide area, linking to its rich traditions, is providing by the Cultural Centre primarily in this time. Small Carpatian Museum, Naive Art gallery, Small Carpatian Enlightenment Center, Birthplace of Ján Kupecký, Center for free time and private gallery G5. In pezinok there are regularly organized prestigious cultural events which have not only local, but also regional, national and international importance. It includes: International festival of amateur choirs Ad Una Corda, International theatre festival Cibulák, festival of brass hands Pezinok´s škopek, International contest in classical dance Pezinok´s bunch of grapes, International festival of social care institutions Pejavo. Special attention is given to grape harvest festival Vinobranie-Vintage festival, which are organized each odd year in Pezinok and are not only the celebration of wine, but it is also the exhibition of cultural potential of whole region.

Tourism
The city is a part of touristic project Small Carpatian Wine way, which links villages and cities in Small Carpatian region from Bratislava as far as Smolenice. Pezinok is interesting for visitors by its historical monuments /they create historical walk/, by favorable cultural events with overcity importance, by unique museal and artistic exhibitions /grape-growing and wine exhibition in the Small Carpatian Museum and the first and the only one Naive Art Gallery in SR, is housed in the newly restored Schaubmar´s Mill with reconstructed mill machinery/ and
with its programme of wine tourism /public wine testing and a local gastronomic specialities/. Pezinok area offers an interesting marked hiking trails, sport facilities /Health complex - tennis, horseback riding/ and downhill skiing and long cross-country trails with snowblowers /Baba hill/.
